On Friday, March 7, at 2:47 p.m., electricity demand in Uruguay reached a new high of 2,507 MW, just one day after another record was set. In just over a month, the 2024 peak was surpassed five times, the last one by 10%, representing a series of records not seen since the winter of 2007. This phenomenon reflects a change in demand dynamics, with a transition from record levels in winter to those in summer, driven primarily by the electrification of home heating and cooling. This report analyzes how these peaks in demand came about, how the electricity system reacted to them and what impact this trend could have in the future.
